NBA Now Showmen of Today

NBA Now Showmen of Today

The role of basketball players as star performers is explored and celebrated in this documentary produced by NBA Entertainment. Some players over the years have stood out for their flashy play on the hardwood, and what makes someone a true performer is demonstrated with a wealth of game footage featuring some amazing ball handling and shooting from the likes of Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Isiah Thomas, and Jason Kidd. Footage from the archival vaults features the great Bob Cousy, and profiles of young star performers include Allen Iverson (whose relatively short stature is more than made up for with deft moves on the court), Shaquille O’Neal (who physically dominates just about anyone else), and Jason Williams (whose career is chronicled going back to home videos of his high-school playing days). Framing the action sequences are numerous interviews with players, coaches, and sportscasters, but that’s really the icing on the cake. The whole point is to be dazzled by the flashy moves on the court in beautifully shot game footage. Some of the action is truly amazing, incredible passes and shots that bring crowds to their feet and will leave viewers at home scratching their heads and asking, “How’d he do that?” –Robert J. McNamara

4 Stars Cool Video
while it’s cool seeing Steve Francis,Ray Allen,Allen Iverson&Vince Carter the Main ones for Me were My Laker Cats Shaq&Kobe which got there Due here.also Jason Kidd was given His props.I liked the Footage from back in the day&I dig when the NBA goes back because they haven’t always acknowledged the past near enough to my liking always.A Cool Set here.

3 Stars Satisfying, depending on your taste
The Showmen of Today video is satisfying if you really enjoy watching the big name superstars in basketball today. They did great features on Kobe, Shaq, and Allen. And my absolute favorite was Vince Carter! The video kind of took the game of an old-school player and compared it to a new-school player with some similarities. My only question is: Where was Kevin Garnett and Tracy McGrady? They could have used the segments on Tim Hardaway and Grant Hill to cover them.

5 Stars kobe bryant
i love this video it’s one of the best i’ve seen. i like the kobe part better. he has so much talent. this is a must.

3 Stars It has its good moments, and its bad ones
Parts of this film are pretty spectacular. I loved the Jason Williams and Vince Carter sections. Those stood out. There are some others that are good, too. Then you have kind of a mid-range coverage of some players that deserve more. I’ve seen better Kobe and Iverson highlights on the NBA Action TV show. They could have done better with this. Not bad, but they just don’t capture the real talent here and kind of leave you disappointed. Also with this film they included a few players who’ve never been anything but hype. Grant Hill? Why are they still trying to push this guy on us? He just doesn’t excite, and I really wish they didn’t waste time on him. They do a little section on Tim Hardaway too, as if he’s a new talent. He’s a friggin veteran, man. The real low point of the film is that they incorporate old dudes into it at every section to show what the NBA used to be like. It’s fine when it’s about Magic, or Isiah, or Pistol Pete. But it drags you down into sheer boredom when they spend 3 minutes on Bob Cousy, or Daryl Dawkins, or Elgin Baylor…zzzzzzzz. Get back to Ray Allen and Steve Francis, neither of which were showcased well. In short, this could have been done a lot better. Too much slow motion and background history and commentating about crap nobody cares about, and not enough action. But hey, NBA video’s gone to pot. Still, this is not the worst one I’ve ever seen. I wish they’d stick to the Michael Jordan’s Playground format. Tons of action that keeps you on the edge of your seat goin…DAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! I guess that’s too much to ask. Anyway, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy a lot of NBA Now. Just don’t expect to be totally blown away.

5 Stars NBA NOW!–An Instant Hit
Kobe, Shaq, Vince, Allen…this latest video from the NBA gives true insight into the stars of today. The excitement of present day NBA is directly attributed to these “Showmen”. I think the title says it all, these guys are the “NBA NOW!” Also, the features on Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, and Steve Francis are tremendous.

5 Stars Awesome DVD! If you’re a laker fan, BUY IT
The lakers are the best team of all time in the NBA. That is evident in the way they play. This dvd is worth every single penny spent on it… My former girlfriends kids destroyed it one day. I was so mad. I said, “Did you know that was my favorite dvd?” She told me that she would buy me another one but never did. Did not like it when I wore my Kobe Bryant jersey. Why would she buy me another disc? I’m gonna buy another one next month when I get paid and nothing is going to happen to this one!

Anyway, to the dvd: It has great interviews with Robert Horry about his game winning buzzer beater against the Portland Trailblazers in game 3 of the NBA playoffs in 2002. Great highlights of all playoff games are included and the miraculous buzzer beater shot by Robert Horry against the Sacremento Kings was unbelievable! I remember that game very clearly. I was over at my best friends house watching the game and he thought they were going to lose. I kind of did too, but I felt confident that they would pull off a win.

I told him, “The game is not over yet. Anything can happen.” When that ball left Robert Horrys hands with one tenth of a second left on the clock, I knew that shot was going in. I jumped up, raised my arms, and was shouting my head off so loud you could have heard me down the block. I can see now why Tim Duncan calls him “big shot bob.” I mean who in the hell can hit a shot like that? The people who knock the lakers, don’t what they are talking about. If people say the lakers suck, then why are they considered one of the greatest NBA teams of all time?

Don’t knock a team of this caliber until you see all of their achievements over the years and then maybe you’ll learn to appreciate a good team when you see it.

5 Stars Great Retrospective
Regardless of what “Laker-haters” may think, this team was an incredible dynasty. Even when it seemed they were on the ropes, someone always stepped up (i.e.-Robert Horry). Jason Kidd was the true 2002 MVP, but the Lakers are still the champions. Sacramento may be upset, but it’s their fault. They were challenging, but who won Game 7 of the Western Finals, on the road, in overtime? Kobe and Shaq was a 1-2 punch that was unstoppable. Even though the dynasty is over, they rank as one of the best teams of all time. This is a great DVD because of the inside footage, as well as the extras. Definitely a 10 in my book.

1 Star NBA = 2 Stars Lakers = 0 Likeable Stars
I respect that the NBA produces these “best of” videos for championship teams. This one is as shoddily produced and quickly knocked off as any of them. However, has there ever been a championship team as smug and unlikeable as the Lakers? Probably not. If you enjoy watching smirking millionaires bathe their egos at the alter of their league-office mandated success go ahead and buy this video. If you actually like sports with real meaning, go watch your local high school basketball team.

5 Stars Great Video on the Champs
truly enjoyed watching this over&over again.while Jason Kidd was my Personal MVP Last year the Nets just were no match for the Lakers.the true Finals was the Lakers&Kings.it was very exciting.while I don’t care much for the kings overall I Respect there depth&hardwork.but it’s great seeing Shaq just Dominate&Kobe getting better each Year&Crew do there thing.Phil Jackson just adding too His Legacy yearly.a Must for Laker Fans.

4 Stars Three Years… No Improvement
Three years, no improvement. No, not the Lakers, I’m talking about this horrible NBA Finals package. I own the DVD of the first Championship title of 1999-2000, and I am sad to say that their has been virtually no improvement in the quality of this product.

Most noticeable to those like me who have the other DVD will immediately notice that they have “recycled” some of the bad keyboard music featured before. Also, at barely 60 mins, they are still doing a VHS-to-DVD conversion, which is frustrating considering that you could cram 3, maybe 4 hours of Lakers footage on the DVD format.

The Western Conference Finals vs. Sacramento is the sole reason I bought the DVD. For the third year in a row, the Conference Finals were acknowledged by everyone as the true NBA Finals, yet the people behind this product do a shabby job of covering the finals and focusing instead on the boring NBA Finals vs. New Jersey Nets. I could really do without the wacked-out Nets fans: the psycho guy with the veins bulging out of his neck and face screaming “NO THREE-PEAT TONIGHT LAKERS! NO THREE-PEAT TONIGHT!” or the moron with the red wig and stockings on his arms chanting “N-E-T-S, NETS, NETS, NETS!”, or even the sight of that guy who jumps up into the camera wearing that HORRIFIC green sweater. There is about 30 minutes of this nonsense, and I actually sat through it hoping to see something that would make me happy I bought this DVD.

Getting back to the Sacramento series. So much is cut out! First of all, NO MENTION of Kobe Bryant’s food poisoning between games 1 and 2. NO MENTION that Shaq is hobbling around after the games from the pain in his foot. The trash talk, one of the highlights of the rivalry, only occurs during one quick scene between Robert Horry and Vlade Divac over the game-winning 3. Those 20 seconds of Robert Horry manage to make the DVD worth buying, though.

Speaking of Horry, one thing I really liked about this DVD that isn’t in the other one is that they play the 2 big game-winning Horry shots (against Portland and Sacramento) in real-time as they were broadcast by NBC. What sort of messes this up for me is that they dub the ESPN announcers over the NBC footage, which is annoying because I HATE THE ESPN ANNOUNCERS! It’s obvious the guy (sorry, forgot his name) hates the Lakers! Pay attention to the sound bytes and you will notice he is always rooting for the other team. Example, Lakers down big in game 4, and he starts comparing the Kings beating the Lakers to the Michael Jordan Bulls beating the Detroit Pistons way back in the early 90’s. The Kings are no Bulls, not in a million years, but they are full of Bull(you-know-what).

Please, if the people who make these DVDs are reading this, try to take advantage of the DVD format. Make the program longer, add better special features (sorry, but Samake Walker and Brian Shaw fishing? ZZZ) and put the emphasis on the Conference Finals, because the Finals, and the East for that matter, are a joke.

Mad Game The NBA Education of Kobe Bryant

Mad Game The NBA Education of Kobe Bryant

“…the writing is sharp, and it’s clear Lazenby knows his stuff. “Mad Game” creates an image of a young player whose determination leaves him aloof, whose lack of a college experience deprives him of some necessary team skills and whose playground style frustrates his teammates.” — Washington Times

“Subtitled The NBA Education of Kobe Bryant, the 313-page biography is proof that there is no such thing as a charmed life…Lazenby’s book makes startlingly clear Bryant, 21, also is like you and me, tiptoeing around hostile co-workers and getting blamed for every little thing that goes wrong on the job and knowing at least one of the smiling faces he sees every day is trashing him behind his back.” — LA Daily News

5 Stars Solid Book
Kobe Bryant is all Ready a Important Player but wait until a few years down the line His Best shall come.the Guy is a Good Balance of Talent&Flaw. He is gonna be Scary in years to Come.this Book brings all those Elements&More out.He has had to deal with alot of things On&Off the COurt but He is Headed for Something Special with His Career.the Sky is the Limit for Him.

5 Stars Mad Game, now Mad NBA CHAMPION!
I read the book a little while back, and I thought it was a great read on the most electrifying basketball player today. At that time, Kobe was going through a lot of growing pains, a lot of failures, crticisms, bad chemistry with teammates. And now, this season, I’ve seen Kobe’s maturation and improvement in the league, playing more under control, playing in Phil Jackson’s triangle offense, having better rapport with Shaq and his teammates. His incredible performance in Game 4 of the NBA Finals in overtime was unforgettable and it is only the beginning. Now he is finally an NBA champion with the Lakers, and hopefully, this will be the beginning of another great Laker dynasty, the first of the 21st century!

5 Stars #1
welcom to the world of kobe bryant this book is nomber 1 out of2,865 books i have read (still counting) this book doesnt just tellyou about kobe it tells you about the whol lakers history and abot how other players reflect on kobe bryant like m.j. & magic Johnson I’ve read this book 3 times and i never get tierd of it i could tell you at least 5 things kobe has remarked of the top of my head I’m 11 years old & for me to type this much I’d have to love this book! & allso the author r. lazenby is supurb!

1 Star More like an MTV than a documentary
It does feature stars but one does not get an insightful explanation of how they truly rose in the field of basketball. If you’re looking for an MTV special using spectacular basketball video clips mostly dunk shots of high school kids (now famous) of a decade ago, this is the right thing. I was looking for a documentary to show what their formula to success was and it isn’t.

4 Stars One Love
One Love was a cool video. I enjoyed trying to figure out who all the players were without watching the Special Features. Oh yeah, these guys were sick long before they got to the League! It’s definitely worth buying.

5 Stars Wow!
Not sure where to start. This was the first DVD of it’s kind I have bought and will probably remain the best. There is constant talk about creating an age limit for players entering the league. However if the players are performing and entertaining like this then as a fan all I can say is let them play!!!!

I have read about the t.v. coverage of highschool games but have never seen it before, it is brilliant to watch.

One down side it is not long enough!!!

Call me greedy but I wanted more!!!

5 Stars Sick highlights plus da illest soundtrack
I got all the and 1 mixes but this tape blew me away! the Kobe v. Lester Earl dunk contest is un f***in believable! Its worth it just for that. And the music- specially Apathy and Tribecca. Saw it in Dime and picked it up next day. 2 questions: First where is Lester Earl today? Next, Juanny was crazy in school, what happened to him?

Like I said, I got them all and this one is the best. 5 *****

5 Stars Baller’s Delight
I just got this DVD and it is HOT! This DVD is by far the best of all the mixtapes out there. I had never seen most of the footage and man this sh*t was dope. It had mad high school footage of like 50 NBA all stars, and not just dunks. I’ve seen all the AND1 and Ball Above All joints, but I think this one is better than any of those. The music is way better too. Go peep this DVD.

5 Stars Seeing Is BELIEVING!
I brought this DVD and two others similiar to it for my (B-Ball-inspired) son. This is one of his favorites; next to D. Wade’s bio-DVD.

This DVD is timeless beauty, it is historical.

It shows the young men’s amazing skills and techniques in the game of B-Ball from their high school and/or college years.

If you miss a move, you have the opportunity to rewind (while it is still available on digital video display).

I highly recommend it for a true B-Ball inspiration.

5 Stars Lakers
Definetly worth buying. KObe fan, Lebron fan no matter what we enjoyed watching it and watching it again!

5 Stars This will knock you out with Excitment
Great dvd to add to your collection. Just pure entertainment, and great entertainment with fantastic special features. 2 thumbs up.

1 Star kobe is a baby
i don’t care if you like this review or not, but kobe should realize now what he had w/ shaq: the best player in the game, and now that it’s his team they are not even going to make the playoffs- and kobe cares too much what the media says about him- blaming everyone else and telling on shaq and his “hush money” and karl malone “harassing” his wife- shut up kobe and just play your selfish game
