Forty Eight Minutes A Night in the Life of the Nba

Two writers covering the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics join in a close look at the teams’ 1987 Boston Garden game. Like Daniel Okrent in his Nine Innings ( LJ 4/1/85), the authors give a detailed play-by-play account. They blend quotes from players, coaches, and others with their own appraisals in background, play critique, etc. Not until the tense final seconds of regulation and an overtime is there a winner between the underdog Cavs and the proud Celts. Educational for developing players and fun for fans, this may be welcome in public and school libraries. Morey Berger, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Manalapan, N.J.

4 Stars Ode to ‘Mr.’ Craig Ehlo…Pluto’s best and Bob Ryan FINALLY did something right!
Great synopsis encompassing some of the best

of alltime: Bird, Ehlo, Jones, McHale, Parish,

Johnson, Wilkens et, al. Not just a game between

the Celtics and Cavaliers back in Nineteen Eighty

Seven. Jerry Sichting comes off well in here as

well, his comments. Sichting from Indiana is to-

day Kevin McHale’s top Sgt. in Minnesota.

5 Stars Nothing but net…
A basketball game in the NBA is 48 minutes long, right? Wrong. There is so much more drama behind the scenes and so much more at stake than another victory in every NBA game that the average fan is never entitled to witness and experience but this book does the best job I’ve ever seen in taking you there. It doesn’t hurt that a classic confrontation between the then-mighty Celtics and the upstart Cavaliers is the matchup taken into focus by this great literary effort of showing what life in the NBA is like (at least during the 1980s). No personal fouls here… just a sure shot for all basketball fans who are also bookworms at heart and are not limited to enjoying the game of basketball on the television or on the court. Like I said, nothing but net..

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Better quality than my old tapes
I recorded this series on video from TV back in the day and kept them around all these years. I just bought this dvd box set and the quality is excellent. So far I only watched games 2 & 3 from this new dvd set. It’s cool that they kept the old CBS introduction and music with the digital basketball bouncing into the net. My only complaint on game 2 is that the picture flips at different times throughout the first half - enough to be annoying. Game 3 cuts over to the Chick Hearn broadcast in the 4th quarter and the video quality looks even better than the 1st 3 quarters on CBS.

It’s refreshing to see a clean picture while watching these games, and by clean I mean no stupid digital crap jumping in your face and clogging the TV screen as today’s media crew loves to overdo the tricks while blocking the action.

And for those who complain that the entire game 1 isn’t shown - you must be Celtic fans. I saw that game once and I don’t care to view it again. Those were imposters in the purple jerseys that day - not the Lakers I knew. I pretty much recorded over that one too! (kept the 1st quarter I think)

I give this 5 stars so far. I want to see the 1984 NBA series come out on dvd too so I can get a sharp copy of the Lakers blowing out the Celtics (with a record 47 pts in one quarter!) in game 3 that year.

If you can’t handle the short shorts from this era, don’t get the dvd. If like me you hate the skirts that players (and all guys) wear these days then this is the dvd for you.

5 Stars Make no mistake, the 1985 Lakers team was the BEST of the 5 Showtime Championship Teams
As a Celtics fan, I feel that the 1984-85 Lakers squad gets LITTLE TO NO RESPECT (and the 1986-87 Lakers get TOO MUCH RESPECT) in the annals of NBA history. Just looking at the stellar roster isn’t enough to judge this team. This team played with heart and determination when most teams would’ve folded after the Memorial Day Massacre. You have to respect a team that eventually won the decisive game on the parquet floor in front of a hostile Boston crowd in Game 6. Sure, maybe Bird injured his hand and maybe both McHale and Parish battled injuries but that shouldn’t take away from what the Lakers did. What they showed in 1985’s Game 6 is what they didn’t show in 1987 which was the ability to close out a tough opponent on the ropes.

Two things of note:

1) This series was not only a redemption for the Lakers (who were seen as soft and easily rattled) but also for the captain Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (if I had to start an NBA team tomorrow and I had the first pick, I’d take Kareem) culminating in his winning the Finals MVP. It also ushered out the great NBA legends Jamaal Wilkes and Bob McAdoo.

2) As a result of the 1985 Lakers winning, Boston management reshuffled its lineup to created the greatest single season team ever assembled in the 1985-86 Boston Celtics with the greatest frontcourt to ever play the game. I’d pay $100 for a DVD set with this team.

and a Postscript: even if you are neither a Laker nor a Celtic fan, you can still appreciate the pure beauty of how the game was played in the 1980s especially by a team that ran the fast-break better than any other. It’s bittersweet to watch these videos knowing how far the NBA game has degraded to boring one-on-one matchup play and slowed tempos. In the 80s, teams played as if it were a 12 second shot clock, not anymore.

5 Stars Complete games!
This is the first Laker video product I’ve seen that features full length games, not the “to fit into two hours including commercials” versions you see on NBA TV or ESPN Classic. And it includes all 6 games, some of which have not been shown even in classic telecasts.

And as a final bonus, one game is incomplete. And the missing part is most of the first half of game 1, with the Celts running out to a 75-44 lead. What a shame that was lost for posterity!

If you lived through that series, the most satisfying in Lakers history for this almost 4 decades fan, or even if you’re too young to had the pleasure, you owe it to yourself to add this to your collection.

5 Stars Necessity item for a Laker Fan
Despite of the lack of the 1st quarter of the finals first quarter (the famou s Memorial Day massacre), the box is a necessity item for a real laker fan. It shows how the game has changed over these years, and how the Lakers of that time was ahead of it’s time. The facility and the control of the game of Magic Johnson is also shown on these 6 games.

Indispensable.

Amazing

Unforgettable

5 Stars Where is game 1?
This championship series along with ‘84 is basketball at its best. Bird, Magic, Kareem, Mchale, Worthy etc, etc. My problem along with many other purchasers I’m sure is game 1. Yes I know this is a Laker dvd and Boston embaressed them but that does not mean you can’t show it. Actually I believe that blowout was a blessing for the Lakers, it woke them up. Most teams would have thrown in the towel after that beatdown but not these guys. You could see the fire in their eyes and the determanation from game 2 on to winning the title in 6 on Boston’s home court. All six games have the opening music and credits with Musburger narrating key points of prior games. All in all a must have set for anyone who loves pure basketball. I just wish that game 1 was shown in it’s entirety!!!

Season of the 76ers The Story of Wilt Chamberlain and the 1967 NBA Champion Philadelphia 76ers

July 7, 2009 by NFL Stats · Leave a Comment

Season of the 76ers The Story of Wilt Chamberlain and the 1967 NBA Champion Philadelphia 76ers

Lynch gives a near play-by-play account of the nail-biting season when the Sixers finally ended the Boston Celtics’ eight-year winning streak in this sentimental but sometimes stirring hagiography of the team and their coach, Alex Hannum. The subtitle is apt, for Chamberlain dominates the book as he dominated the game; the rest of the story, though well-researched and competently told, seems a little thin in comparison. The most captivating sections are those that describe how the team was put together after this, the narrative blurs into a series of plays, games and scores that become numbing in spite of Lynch’s clipped, dramatic prose and copious dialogue drawn from press accounts and interviews that he conducted over the last few years with team members and coaches. Lynch, vice-president of news and programming for NewsChannel 8 in Springfield, Va., is an adamant Sixers fan, a position that may alienate certain readers while endearing him to the other fans of the team who are likely to read this book. Enthusiasts of NBA history and Chamberlain should also find something here to hold their attention. 18 pages of photos not seen by PW.

2 Stars Games Do Not Tell The Entire Story
Entering the 1966-1967 season, Wilt Chamberlain was at the crossroads of his storied NBA career.

Criticized by many inside and outside the NBA as being a selfish player who only cares about his scoring statistics - at the expense of team honors - a frustrated Chamberlain publicly lashed out at players, coaches and league officials in an April 1965 interview in Sports Illustated, entitled, My Life In A Bush League.

But one season later, Chamberlain seemingly revamped his game - notching MVP honors by leading the league in scoring and rebounds, but also ranking third in assists and playing a tenacious defense - as the Philadelphia 76ers put together arguably the greatest NBA season ever by winning regular season 68 of 81 games enroute to the championship, defeating the San Francisco Warriors in six games.

To put the regular season in perspective, the 76ers captured the Eastern Division by eight games over Boston and would have won the Western Division by 24 games over San Francisco.

In a flawed account of the season, author Wayne Lynch places the focus on Chamberlain, though what coach Alex Hannum assembled proved to be a historic lineup of talent, which included Chet Walker, Hal Greer, Wali Jones, Billy Cunningham and Lucious Jackson.

Lynch relies heavily on game-by-game accounts and fails to breath life into the statistics through oral histories or previous accounts by 76er players and opponents. He sacrifices what could have been truly an outstanding overview for just the facts surrounding jump shots, rebounds and layups.

Games alone do not tell the entire story of a championship season. And without a perspective from the hardwood floor and locker room, the stats overwhelm a text that essentially is without the sweat and heart of a team.

4 Stars A Celtics Fan speaks (s/b 4.5 stars)
Although I disagree that the 1967 76ers are the Greatest Team ever, I feel that this team is at least Top 3 and probably the most underrated of all the serious teams in the discussion. This is the year that Wilt (who actually led the league in assists this season) and the 76ers finally broke through and won two championships [ 1) by winning the NBA title and 2) by dethroning the Celtics]. For a team that was named the Greatest Team ever at the league’s 25th anniversary (even above all the Bill Russell-led Celtics teams), this team gets almost no respect today. This may have something to do with the fact that they were unable to repeat and lost to an aging Celtics team in 1968. Still it’s hard to argue against the 1967 76ers being the best team ever (I know it’s tough for me to argue against it, and I feel that the 1985-86 Celtics are the Best Team ever).

I do have some problems with the overall credibility of the author when he says that the only two teams that are in the discussion with this Sixers team are the 1972 Lakers (which is fine) and the 1996 Bulls (which is just preposterous) and his rationale was based on record which was inflated due to the increase in expansion teams. There are three teams from the 1980s that should definitely be in the discussion (1983 Sixers, 1986 Celtics, 1987 Lakers) for Greatest Team ever. However, he did put the 2001 Lakers in their place by saying that really great teams get it done throughout the season (despite the team’s 15-1 playoff record). Overall this book, much like Peter May’s book on the 1985-86 Celtics, is good as a chronicle for a great season but is flawed when the authors try to analyze why their subjects are the greatest team ever.

5 Stars Long Overdue Book on a legendary team
Only Philadelphia could totally neglect the greatest NBA team of alltime for over thirty years. I remember going to the old Convention Hall in Philly and watching Wily, Chet, Hal, Billy and Luke and the boys obliterate opposing teams. Big Luke was my favorite player—he set picks for Cunningham, Greer, and Walker; he played tenacious defense, and rebounded like a demon. He sacrificed much of his own scoring production for the good of the team. Wilt said Luke was the most intimidating player in NBA history. Wilt recalled with a laugh that whenever Willis Reed saw Jackson walking done the tunnel onto the court during warmups, Reed began to visibly shake. A nice little ditty; I highly recommend it. Now I wish someone in Philly would produce a DVD highlighting that same 1966-67 season. That would be fun to watch.

4 Stars THE TELLING OF A SEASON OF GREATNESS
THIS IS THE STORY OF ONE OF THE MOST DOMINATING TEAMS IN ANY SPORT. THE SIXERS WERE PRACTICALLY UNBEATABLE DURING THEIR INCREDIBLE SEASON OF 66-67. THIS IS A MONTH BY MONTH SUMMARY OF THE HIGHLIGHTS AND EVENTS WHICH BROUGHT THE SIXERS TO THE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP. THE FIRST PART OF THE BOOK LEADS UP TO THE EVENTS WHICH BROUGHT THE TEAM TOGETHER. IT PROVIDES AN IN DEPTH LOOK AT INDIVIDUAL GAMES, ESPECIALLY THE PLAYOFFS. ALSO AN AFTER SEASON SUMMARY OF HOW THE TEAM LOST TO THE CELTICS IN 67-68 AND THE EVENTUAL BREAKUP OF THIS GREAT DYNAMO. ALSO SOME GREAT STATS AND SOME NOSTALGIC PHOTOS PROVIDE US WITH A GOOD BOOK. RECOMMENDED.

3 Stars Something to celebrate!
… it’s a book about a championship season in Philadelphia, and that’s certainly something to celebrate … and there’s also some very interesting commentary thrown in from Bill Cunningham …

4 Stars HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL !!
The other reviewers have said it all. There’s not much to add.

I’d emphasize each disc, of the five in the set, has video on BOTH sides … so we are talking about LOTS of highlights and full-length copies of games. It takes a whole “rainy day” to watch it.

B-

1987 NBA EAST CONF FINALS: CELTICS V. PISTONS (GAME 5)

My favorite segment of the entire series had to have been Game #7, as won by the Celts over the Lakers, in 1969, as Bill Russell and Sam Jones were retiring. You get 4th Quater and post-game only.

I still liked it because, as a grade-schooler at the time, I was not allowed to stay up late enough, on a Monday night, to watch that game live from Los Angeles. In those days, the networks lacked the “juice,” so as to get weekday games from out west into “prime time.”

I think that game may have tipped off at 10:30 p.m. EST — way too late for me, then !! So I love seeing it now.

Pass the word … the Celts are back !!

5 Stars Great DVD Set For Celtics Fans
This five-disc set chronicles the history of the Boston Celtics, the National Basketball Association’s most successful franchise.

The first two discs contain miscellaneous features highlighting the complete history of the team, from the early days of the NBA to today. There is footage covering the Russell-led teams of the Fifties and Sixties, and coverage of the mid-1970s title teams. Also included are the championship videos describing the titles that the team won in the 1980s.

The last three discs contain portions of games or complete games as they were originally broadcast from the 1969, 1976, 1981, 1984, and 1986 title drives, as well as Game 5 of the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals when Larry Bird stole the Isiah Thomas pass to preserve what ultimately led to another trip to the NBA Finals.

This set contains some of the greatest basketball ever played. Owners of this set will be able to see, in the old Celtic clubs and the squads that they faced in these games, some of the greatest teams in NBA history. And what Celtics fan wouldn’t love to have Game 7 of the 1984 NBA Finals in all its glory on DVD?

5 Stars A must for celtic fans
This collection is a must for celtic fans. Unfortunately 5 DVDs can not cover the entire history of a team that has won 16 NBA titles. The games presented in their entirety are mostly from the 80s (Bird, Parish, McHale era) with the addition of the triple overtime classic of 1976 against the Suns. One could argue that one game against the Milwalky Bucks during the 79s could have made it to the collection. It is also a pity that no whole game from the Russell era made it to the set in it’ s entirety, but probably the 60’s footage wasn’ t that good to be included in the DVD, and the documentaries included make up for that omission.

On the technical side, there are very few technical hitches and the games are presented in their original broadcast (not as shown in the NBA’s greatest games show, as for example in the Lakers box set)

4 Stars buy it at wal mart for 25$
i have really enjoyed it so far, esp complete epic playoff games that arent edited…where have all the good times gone?

Magic’s Number Retirement Ceremony

4 Stars Excellent Jordan, very good Bird & Magic…
First, let me say that package’s value per price is OUTSTANDING! You get 7 double-sided DVDs for 30$! You can’t argue with that!

Second, it’s not as good as I thought (hence the 4 stars instead of 5)…

ULTIMATE JORDAN

The most comprehensive coverage of Jordan’s dazzling career is OK. There is too much talk and too little highlights, but that is the weakness of every NBA package. Jordan has many highlights that are not present (and that could’ve been included), but all that is forgivable when you get to the extra features: Michael’s BEST dunks, moves, assists, clutch-shots and Michael’s great 8 games. These extra-features are the best part of the whole package, since you get MJ in an exciting NBA-Action Top 10 Countdown format - you’ll be thrilled even if you saw ALL of them before because thare is very little chit-chat!

MAGIC: ALWAYS SHOWTIME & LARRY BIRD: BASKETBALL LEGEND

Magic’s and Larry’s career were as impressive as Michael’s, but again - too little highlights and too many talking heads telling us how great Magic was. Aslo, I don’t like this kind of rewriting the history, showing only the highs and (almost) forgetting the lows. And finally - there are no extra-features like on MJ’s DVD! WTF? Surely Magic and Larry had enough highlights to put on a TOP 10 in every category!

And finally the third - the included complete games: MJ x5, Larry x3 and Magic x3…

As great as those games were, the choices are a bit peculiar, especially regarding Magic and Bird. I mean, two games from Magic’s rookie year and one All-star game after he retired? Not one game from his 1987 MVP season when he downed Boston in the Garden? Only one Playoff’s Game for Bird? And finally - no whole game with “The Shot” for MJ? Come on!!!

But let us go back to what is good about those games: what is great about those games is that you see basketball as it should be played: a combo of smarts, skill and atlethicism compared to today’s no-smarts, low level-skills and steroid-athlesticism. You can see here how all ten players on the court could make a layup with their right or left hand, as well as how all big man could put the ball on the floor or pass the ball which is a lost art today, except for Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and maybe Lebron James.

Also, you’ll see that team-defenses prior to “Bad Boys” were virtually non existent, that refs called the game in star’s favour exactly like today, but there were a lot less whistled calls compared to today’s game. And you’ll notice there was very little complaining about refereeing back then.

The quality of the early games (1980-1983) is not so good, but that’s understandable.

So, overall? A good introduction to each of these basketball legends. MJ’s bit of package is the best, while Magic’s and Bird’s falters a bit (not including extra-features). The games are a great treat, but the choice could be better…

5 Stars A must have for every nba fan
If still haven’t got each individual DVDs (Ultimate Jordan, Larry Bird: A Basketball Legend, Magic Johnson: Always Showtime) then this DVD is for you! It contains the greatest games of each NBA Legends. And quite a bargain for $29.99.

My only question is Why didnt this set include the 4 game sweep of the pistons? The pistons box set includes the ECF against Chicago. If,and hopefully when, the second Bulls Championship set comes out, it will have the seven games against New York along with the six games against Portland. All in all, its a hell of a collection. Just need to work a bit harder next time fellas. Get on it, and dont disappoint

5 Stars Awesome, everything I expected
There was a user who said part of a game was missing, but it appeared that was how it was originally broadcast. The DVD package says it’s in the original broadcast format, and it meets those expectations.

5 Stars “A must” for lakers funs
Just a few words: excellent quality and very good presentation, it’s a pleasure to see again (after years) these five games with Jordan vs Magic.

I hope Amazon will be releasing stuff like this in the future (different finals like 1985 against Boston Celtics).

3 Stars Needs non-broadcast audio track
Having purchased the Bulls’ Dynasty Series title, I quickly tired of the network announcer’s play-by-play, espcially the grating, innane, nonsensical Bill Walton and the try-too-hard Marv Albert. I wish they would have an audience-only audio track available. It would be like being at the game. I could listen to guys like Doug Collins and Hubie Brown, who give good insight into the plays, but they weren’t working for NBC.

5 Stars Worth the money
I loved watching these games, all five games of the 1991 NBA Finals between the Lakers and Bulls. Games 2, 4, and 5 have the classic “NBA on NBC intro”, something I was not expecting after reading some previous reviews for it. There is pre-game talk before each game, which gives it some flavor of what to expect for each game. The quality is much better than I expected from games recorded 16 years ago.

If anyone purchased the Chicago Bulls: 1990s DVD, one will notice there is 20 + minutes of extra footage on game 5, the clincher. More pre-game and locker room footage. It is not made to fit a 2 hour time frame for NBATV or ESPN Classic. That is a plus to me because the celebrations are entertaining.

I noticed in game 3 that it is not 100% the full broadcast. They chipped 30 seconds, and it’s easy to tell. This probably happened a few more times, but if so, it’s hard to tell. They did what they could I suppose and it didn’t take away too much from the game.

The bonus sixth disc is the Learning To Fly video. This is also on the Chicago Bulls: 1990s DVD, just in case anyone is expecting more. I figured it to be the case when I purchased it.

The box itself is cool. The front is the boring Bulls logo, but the back has the 1991 team on it. Very nice. In the three cases for the 6 discs, each side has game statistics for the particular game. Very similar to the

2005 White Sox World Series DVDs. I’m a stat freak, and it was helpful in following the game.

Like I said, I’ll buy any Bulls Finals releases that come out. I’m already waiting for the 1992 NBA Finals to come out, and eventually I hope all of them are released.
