The NBAs 100 Greatest Plays

August 29, 2009 by NFL Stats · Leave a Comment

The NBAs 100 Greatest Plays

Perhaps more than any other sport, basketball is a star-driven event: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O’Neal–the list could go on and on. But it’s not necessarily these athletes’ overall careers that we remember as much as the breathtaking individual plays these illustrious men have given us. Is it possible to break down a hundred of these greatest moments in NBA history? The NBA’s 100 Greatest Plays certainly tries.

While last-minute heroics tend to be the standard by which we define excellence, there are many other moments that have left an indelible impression, many of them highlighted here. The video clips fall into 10 categories: Dunks, Alley-oops, Assists, Steals, Blocks, Teamwork, the Clutch Shot, Moves, Hustle, and Buzzer-Beaters. At the beginning of each section is a brief introduction. Before showing the top 10 dunks of all time, for example, we learn about the evolution of the dunk–from the first slam to the man who could fly, Michael Jordan–and we hear background commentary from NBA legends such as Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Dr. J, and Bill Russell. This video recalls familiar moments of NBA lore that you will want to own for countless repeat viewings. –Jeremy Storey

4 Stars Very organised material!!
Although the footage does not include recent plays, it is a very good effort. For young guys I believe it is a great school…

5 Stars Best series for Basketball fans
As a Sri Lankan the exposure to the NBA is limited, This series keeps me updated on what happened. This is really great for NBA Fans

4 Stars Great DVD…But I don’t agree with all choices…
I am a great fan of the NBA (mainly the 80’s)…This DVD was perfect for me to see and enjoy.

Of course it’s impossible to agree with all the choices made for the Top plays…I really don’t liked the Top 10 dunks…but the Top 10 Blocks are incredible!(Man…I love Manute Bol)

If you like the greatest moments of sports you must buy it…

5 Stars Excellent
This is an excellent video. Sure, most of it is 2000 or earlier, but they are great plays. My 11 year old son, who plays basketball, and I enjoyed watching it. We both talked about strategy, team play, and other stuff stemming from the video (lots of pausing). Great way to introduce the heroes and history of the sport.

3 Stars should be called best old school plays
This was a good dvd , but it almost put me to sleep when it had reel after reel of 1960’s material. There was a good deal of 80’s stuff, and very few 90’s material.

Data Geeks Play Fantasy Football Too!

August 29, 2009 by NFL Stats · Leave a Comment

If you thought my only purpose in life was to write Python code , or save the world one Cox proportional hazard model at a time—well—you were wrong. In fact, quite to the contrary. As regular readers already know , I am an avid fan of the National Football League , and also have an affinity toward a certain NFC East team . As such, I have played fantasy football for many years, and with the start of the 2009 NFL season right around the corner many fantasy football managers are preparing

NBA Street Series Vol 3

The NBA brings you more off-the-hook hoops highlights from your favorite NBA stars with Street Series: Volume 3 featuring dazzling ankle breakers, huge dunks, pinpoint passes and ruthless rejections. Watch 2005 NBA MVP Steve Nash and two-time NBA champion Manu Ginobili split the defense. Intimidation is what we’re talking about with Shaquille O’Neal and Amare Stoudemire. And shake ?n bake with Dwyane Wade, Tracy McGrady and so much more!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars A mix of Dunks & Ankle Breakers !!
Another part in the NBA Street Series, which follows up NBA Dunks 1 & 2 and Ankle Breakers 1 & 2. Really nice dvd, with a combination of what Dunks & Ankle breakers have provided. But then with a little bit more ! The NBA Street Series are a must have for any NBA-Fan !!

4 Stars Nice combination of Dunks and Ankle Breakers
I recently bought this movie and I enjoyed it. If you are a NBA fan then this is a must. It features most of the highlights from the 04-05 season and also the 2005 dunk contest in its entirety and highlights from the 2005 all-star weekend. If you want to see both awesome plays and thunderous dunks then this is the video to get. No more buying both Dunks and Ankle Breakers. It’s all on one DVD.

R.I.P. Bob Carroll

August 26, 2009 by NFL Stats · Leave a Comment

In some sad news, Professional Football Researchers Association co-founder and Executive Director Bob Carroll passed away on Tuesday. I didn't know Bob personally, but he was the co-author of The Hidden Game of Football , which had a profound influence on our site (the book introduced Adjusted Yards for the first time), as well as sites like Football Outsiders (the underpinnings of the DVOA method come almost directly from The Hidden Game ) and Advanced NFL Stats (the book included the
